A Study for Attitudes toward the Mentally Ill and Knowledge about Mental Illness and Mental Health Care Services in a Mixed Region of Urban and Rural Community

Abstract
Objectives£º The purpose of this survey is to get basic data to develop plan and strategy of community mental health care services in Asan city. So the authors investigated the attitudes toward mentally ill and the knowledge about mental illness and mental health care services among the residents of Asan city.

Methods£º The subjects of this study are the 310 persons aged between 20 and 69 who live in Onyang 3-dong and Dogo-myeon, Asan-si, Chungcheongnam-do. Tool of the study is Community Attitudes to the Mentally Ill Inventory (CAMI).

Results£º The residents of Asan city showed generally positive attitudes to mentally ill. But they lacked the knowledge about mental illness and mental health care services. The lower educated, buddist, farmers, persons who live in Dogo-myeon, persons whose monthly income are above three million won, persons who have experience for contacting mentally ill showed more negative attitudes to the mentally ill. The lower educated and farmers lacked overall awareness of mental illness and mental health care services, too.

Conclusion£ºThe community education to reduce the prejudice and misunderstanding against the mentally ill should be actively and intensively concentrated upon the persons who showed negative attitude. Furthermore, systematic public education and information should be constantly delivered to community residents to improve the awareness of mental illness and mental health care services.
